Mike Hughes

An ex-police traffic officer, Mike holds the coveted double Grade 1 Advanced Police Driving Certificate and Advanced Police Motorcycle Certificate along with the prestigious Police Driving Instructor Certificate.

 

Mike started training motorcyclists to pass their bike test in 1978 and was the regional training officer and area manager for south Wales under the National Motorcycle Training Scheme (STAR RIDER) before going on to become a DSA Examiner for the then Part One bike test. A car and bike examiner for the Institute of Advanced Motorists, Mike was president of the Carmarthen & West Wales IAM Group. He has advised the Indian government on the introduction of motorcycle training for the general public and assisted some Eastern block countries in specialist police driver training matters.

 

As a police officer Mike was senior driving instructor at the Dyfed-Powys Police Driver Training Unit and was responsible for the design and introduction of many new driving courses for the force, several of which were later copied by other police forces.

 

A qualified Royalty and VIP Driving Instructor, Mike is also a National Instructor at Evasive, Offensive and Anti Hi-Jack Driving Skills, Protected Driving, Surveillance and Counter-Surveillance Driving, Pursuit and Containment, Land Rover and ATB Land Base (LANTRA) qualified Specialist 4x4 driving instructor (both commercial and recreational), Skid Car and a Racing Circuit Instructor. Mike has written several driver related instructional handbooks for the police and been the subject of two TV documentaries relating to police driver training along with many other TV documentary appearances concerned with police driving.

 

A one time rally driver and enthusiast, his main interests now include classic and modern motorcycling, watching most sport and keeping out of harms way!

 

Mike is a Speed Awareness Instructor and along with colleague Sarah Stephens is also a Diamond Approved Taxi-Driver Trainer.
