Go For It Academy

THE GO FOR IT VISION MATERIALISES IN THE

GO FOR IT PEMBROKESHIRE COLLEGE DRIVING ACADEMY

    The Future... And Beyond...

John Llewellyn and colleague Mike Hughes have long believed that the only real and sustainable way to improve driving standards within Pembrokeshire, and thereby reduce accident casualties, is by developing a centre of excellence where young drivers can learn the skills they need to become safer drivers.

This needs to be based around a resource centre where the information students need is readily available, where they can get assistance with study and which they can feel a part of. In other words, an Academy, where learning a skill is just part of learning a skill for life.

An academy where beginners can learn and develop the skills necessary to pass their driving tests and then progress through intermediate and onto advanced driving skills.

Being one of the most modern and successful colleges in the UK, Pembrokeshire College is the obvious choice of location for such an academy. The college already has many of the young, inexperienced and novice drivers in Pembrokeshire under its roof and to base an academy, which is not just a resource centre, but somewhere where practical advice and training can be gained, within its structure would greatly benefit those young drivers and the college as a whole.

Designed by John and Mike, the academy has attracted interest and approval from Pembrokeshire Road Safety, Welsh Assembly Members Paul Davies and Joyce Watson along with MP Stephen Crabb.

Free of Charge to all students, the Academy will help new drivers through 5 phases of learning, Parts 1, 2 and 3 will explain in detail what a driving licence means, give practical advice on the Highway Code and the Theory and Hazard Perception tests.

Part 4 is the only phase where students will have to pay to gain practical driving experience to prepare them for their driving test, either through one of the Go For It instructors or with an instructor of their choice.

Part 5 will see students return to the Academy for a further free phase as full licence holders to learn more about responsible and safe driving. Those students who are successful in all 5 modules will be presented with a Certificate by Pembrokeshire College which they can add to their CV for future job applications.

In time, it is hoped that the Academy Certificate will become recognised by employers as the required standard for all driving jobs and that it will also become more widely recognised and rewarded.

Pembrokeshire College have already invested quite heavily in the Academy, providing resources and a training area and various prestigious local companies are also expressing a very keen interest in becoming associated with the Academy.

It is hoped that the academy would become recognised nationally and eventually copied by other colleges thereby having a visible impact on casualty figures throughout the UK.

The dream of a centre of excellence where new drivers can be taught the driving skills that will stay with them for life has now become a reality.

The Go For It Driving Academy could be the model copied by other colleges of further education and become recognised as a consultative body in road safety both locally and nationally, influencing decisions that target the ultimate dream - reducing road traffic accident casualties and deaths on Pembrokeshire's roads .... and beyond.
